Throughout the Alpine River Running Class 4-5 course we will be working on various techniques such as:

Breaking in and out of the river is a basic manoeuvre that we have learnt when we first went kayaking on a river, however we now want to improve our eddy skills to enable us to catch any eddy on the river.  With the characters of eddys changing on various styles of river we will learn the different techniques that will help us get safely and smoothly into an eddy without the wobbles or getting caught on the edge of our kayak or stuck in the boils or eddy line!

Scouting is not just important to see where we need to go but as we start out journey into reading and understanding the dynamics of whitewater it will help us to plan our line and be one step ahead when we reach that certain point on the rapid or feature.

Looking ahead, reading and predicting river features - the more understanding of whitewater we have the easier it becomes to put in the correct technique, with a positive body position thus helping us to stay on the line and be ready for the next move or challenge.  We will be looking at features such as waves (diagonal, straight, V waves, green and crashing waves) and holes (friendly, unfriendly and big volume) and the effects this has on our line or route down a rapid.

Safety and Group Dynamics will also be an important part of our Alpine River Running course.  Understanding group dynamics and slowing everything down at first will give us a great insight into how we would run a typical Alpine style rapid with a group of friends and of course the more controlled and organised the group is the safer the descent will be, limiting those critical situations and lowering the chances of having a real time situation!

Equipment related to river running and its pros and cons with relation to our kayaking skill and the improvements made in kayaking equipment over the past few years.  Plus our future intentions will also be covered and its relationship to equipment will also be approached throughout the course.  Also anyone who comes on our courses will receive a PEAK UK discount voucher.

Understanding and working with Momentum - both lateral and downstream, working with our edges and understanding the fundamentals of body, boat and blade.  We are aiming to make you a more dynamic and pro-active style of kayaker.

Kit to bring

If you have your own equipment then please bring it along for the course.  We teach the modern way of kayaking and so if you are in an extremely old, long boat with no edge then we have modern designed kayaks, paddles and equipment that is included in the price of the course.  A sturdy pair of river boots are mandatory (no sandals) plus any of your own personal kayaking apparel.

Experience Required

You should have experience of kayaking Class IV and upwards whitewater and your roll should be solid!  We will be kayaking for around 4-5 hours a day, so though you do not need to be an Olympic Athlete you should have a certain amount of paddle fitness or stamina!

Accommodation and Food

We have everything here in the Arlberg Region from camping, bed and breakfast, holiday flats and of course hotels.  Just go to our partners page to see just a few options or drop us a mail and we can send you some recommendations for a great place to stay where you will feel welcome enabling you to relax and get a good nights sleep after a great days kayaking.

Lunch is a personal choice and we will stop at a local market or bakery so that we can re-fuel after our first run!

For dinner you have various options with restaurants close by or if you would like a halfboard option then just let us know when you get in touch!

Summer is a special and colourful time in Austria. Flowers hang from balconies of houses and traditional farm houses known as Hof, high alpine meadows bloom and the ringing of cow bells set in some of the most scenic and dramatic mountains in the world is just another highlight!

It is a special time to be in the Alps and in Summer all our major rivers are in great condition with optimum river levels and with long days of glorious sunshine there is no place we would rather be.  This is really an ideal time to come and kayak here in the Austrian Alps to not only improve your kayaking technique and understanding of dynamic whitewater but to have a whole lot of fun while doing so!!
